Walmart had at least fifteen shooting incidents this month, which is almost certainly a record. They happened mostly in two large clusters, one of five shootings in the first four days of the month; the second with seven shootings starting on Thanksgiving Day ending on the following Monday, with one more on Wednesday and the other two spread out in between.
At least four people were killed in these shootings including two that were killed by police officers. There were several road rage arguments and a disgruntled employee shot another one he claimed threatened him. At least half of these shootings hit and injured someone, if not killed them; however one of them was an accidental shooting where a man was cleaning his gun in the parking lot and he only suffered minor injuries.
One of the police shootings where a suspect was killed involved a suspect that had a history of running away from police during encounters and a police officer that was previously suspected of lying. He was investigated after investigators raided a police department and confiscated guns.
That’s right it was a police department they were raiding. The officer was suspected of improperly storing firearms they confiscated and posing with one of the. No charges were filed and he was allowed to continue working but a prosecutor said he wouldn’t prosecute cases brought by this officer since he didn’t feel he could trust him; now there’s an ongoing investigation to whether this was a justifiable homicide with credibility problems on both sides.
There were at least six more gun related crimes including a carjacking; one of the shooting incidents also involved a suspect that attempted two carjacking’s while trying to escape; and one of the incidents was thought to be an active shooter incident at the time but later investigation indicated it might have been a hoax and there may not have actually been any guns involved, although it caused an enormous panic at the time.
There have been a growing number of reports from local cities, often with input from their police departments admitting that crime is much higher at Walmart than it is elsewhere; this isn’t something new however it is new that it is being reported so widely. Even though it is being reported much more widely now most people that read articles in their local papers probably don’t realize that there are dozens of similar reports around the country; and most of the people hearing about the shooting in their area probably don’t know about the other thirteen.
Walmart is responding to this problem by “taking justice into its own hands” in a program they call “restorative justice” where they don’t call the police if suspected shoplifters agree to take an online course through a private contractor that is working for profit. If they accept they have to either pay $400 up front or agree to pay $500 in instalments in return for no prosecution. They had a story which reports the views of so-called experts that reviewed this program; however these experts were mostly if not all involved in the privatization of security and they were as concerned or more concerned about increasing profits for a growing business as they were about security and reducing crime.
However even a few of these saw how many potential problems could come of this and one of them even went so far as to call it extortion and expressed concerns that the usual efforts to protect suspects rights were being abandoned; which appears to be justified. The private security firm carrying out these investigations is involved in lawsuits involving false imprisonment and trying to charge someone accused but not convicted of petty theft of under $10 $500 for their services.
This is a disaster waiting to happen and the vast majority of the public isn’t aware of it or the potential consequences. There is little or no chance that this will reduce their crime problem since that may not even be the objective. These corporations openly say they’re looking at this as an opportunity to increase profits which means that if they reduce crime their profits go down.
One of the most obvious problems with their efforts to reduce crime is that they don’t even try to figure out why it increased in the first place and to prevent the root causes. If they did they would know that the design of their stores is a virtual invitation to shoplifters making it easy for many people to walk out with entire carts full of stolen merchandise. There is also evidence to indicate that union busting tactics results in higher work place confrontation and other good research that could help prevent crime in the first place; but they don’t even look at any of this.
However it appears as if crime reports about petty crime are going down but there should be doubts about whether this is accurate or they simply aren’t reporting them as often. This month there have been as many if not more dramatic incidents but at the beginning of the month the total number of reports seem to drop, although I can’t be certain by how much without closer review.
I don’t know for certain but I suspect that either the media, which get profits from selling ads to large corporations like Walmart, is cutting back on their reports or Walmart is simply declining to call them in to the police so the media never even hears about it. This isn’t wild speculation since the media has a history of writing many positive stories about Walmart that involves many obvious distortions; and Walmart has a history of trying to use their political power to influence reporting of their problems and trying to censor things they don’t like. On at least one occasion a police chief reported about how big their problems were but then after a closed door meeting with Walmart representatives and politicians quickly said that Walmart is working with them to reduce crime in a surprising reversal of many of his previous statements.
They also had at least seven crashes or near accidents on their property or one which started on their property as a shoplifting that lead to a chase and fatal crash; two of the near collisions were intentional attempts to assault or intimidate people after an argument and a shoplifting attempt. There were at least two or three arsons at Walmart including one where the suspect threatened a police officer.
They had at least half a dozen to a dozen assaults with bats knives fists or brawls that were reported including one where a pregnant woman was punched in the face and several sexual assaults. One of the Walmart workers also falsely accused a pregnant woman of stealing and told her to pull up her shirt because he didn’t think she was pregnant when he saw her come in.
Walmart is creating their own training academies; yet they can’t seem to teach their employees to behave better than this? This is just one of many examples where Walmart workers are over eager in absurd efforts to reduce crime and when they feel the need to blame someone it is the worker but they never disclose their training practices if they have a choice; so it is difficult if not impossible to know if it might be partially a result of that.
Shoppers in Florida shouldn’t be surprised if they find decomposing bodies in a vehicle in their parking lots; Florida gets more than their share of that. This is the third consecutive month where a dead body was found that had been there at least two days. This time it was decomposing for close to a month if not longer before they noticed.
This isn’t considered suspicious, since poor people have to die someplace so it is now normal although most people don’t realize it.
Walmart is also facing a long list of labor disputes or accusations of fraud, as usual. They’re much more common than they used to be in China where workers are doing a much more effective job standing up for their rights than they have in the past; however they’re having mixed results in the U.S. especially in Arkansas where the government favors Walmart heavily and their political connections haven’t weakened since the wife of the governor was on their board in the eighties; however when she failed to win the presidential race this month Walmart didn’t join the stock market’s rally.
Truck drivers in California had better luck, when they won a suit claiming that Walmart intentionally failed to pay minimum wage, than Arkansas where they had their case thrown out. However Walmart routinely appeals even when they win and the government often seems more concerned about protecting them than their workers or consumers. One woman faced a nightmare when she had conclusive evidence to prove that she was a victim of fraud ruining her credit but couldn’t get through the bureaucracy at Walmart and their creditors ruining her record; and tests proved that there is no Aloe Vera in products advertising they have it. It is almost impossible to know what you’re buying unless you can see potential problems thanks to trade secrecy laws and lack of enforcement's of any laws if they still exist protecting consumers.
You would think that someone that gets away with driving a motorbike through the isles at Walmart, wearing a cape and his underwear, because the management doesn’t call the police wouldn’t want to post evidence of his crime on the internet, ensuring the police would eventually catch on and arrest him.
You would be wrong in at least one case.
To the best of my knowledge most Walmarts don’t have signs saying that you’re not allowed to load up dead deer’s dripping with blood that you just killed into a shopping cart and roll them into the store; but if you do all you’ll get is a request to leave without calling the police. Unless someone posts a picture on the internet no one would know if you did this either.
I have no way of knowing whether these two managers declined to call police as a result of orders from the corporate office to cut back on these calls; but I wouldn’t rule it out.
Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in October 2016. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

EDEN – Around 11:45 a.m. today, Eden Police responded to the Walmart Supercenter parking lot on E. Arbor Lane, where an argument between two people escalated and two or three gunshots were fired from one of their vehicles. No injuries or property damage has been reported.
“Responding officers arrived and canvassed the area of the parking lot and front entrance,” Lt. Clint Simpson said in a news release. “Initially, officers spoke with several people in the parking lot and did not locate a witness to the incident or anyone having knowledge of the report incident.”
Officers stayed in the area and finally found a shopper coming out of the store who had witnessed the argument.
Eden Police continue to investigate the incident, and are searching for a late 1980s white Chevrolet Impala. Complete article

Woman hit by her own car in Tenn. Walmart parking lot dies 11/02/2016
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman who was hit by her own car has died from injuries sustained during that incident.
According to police, they were called to the Walmart store in the 500 block of North Germantown Parkway Tuesday afternoon. When they arrived, they discovered a pedestrian, later identified at 74-year-old Peggy Rose, pinned underneath a car in the parking lot.
It was determined Rose was backing up at a high rate of speed with her left side door open when she hit a pedestrian. The impact knocked that person into the front under carriage of another vehicle.
At some point, Rose fell out of the driver’s seat and was run over by her own vehicle. Complete article

West Melbourne Fla. police are investigating the discovery of a body in a van parked near the garden section of a Wal-Mart Supercenter.
The body was found around 4 p.m. Wednesday in a Dodge Grand Caravan at the store located at 845 Palm Bay Road. The van had what appeared to be a shredded, temporary tag possibly from Wisconsin, police said.
"We are conducting a death investigation in the parking lot," said Capt. Richard Cordeau, spokesman with the West Melbourne Police Department.
"Due to the evidence at the scene, it does appear that (the body) has been here for some time," said Cordeau, adding that detectives were en route to the site. Complete article

Marshall Richard Mastenbrook, of Shoreview, is charged with one count of reckless discharge of a firearm, a felony, stemming from the Aug. 6 incident, court documents filed in Anoka County show.

The Newton Police Department, on its Facebook page, said three people walked into the store shortly before 9 a.m. and tried to pay for about $1,100 of merchandise with fraudulent credit cards. They left the store with the loaded-down carts – abandoning one as a store employee approached them – then got into two different vehicles to flee.
An officer spotted one of the vehicles – a red car – driving west on Highway 50 and started a chase after learning it had been stolen. When the officer tried to pull the car over, its driver refused to stop and sped along the highway at up to 115 mph, the agency said.
The two suspected shoplifters died when the car swerved to avoid stop sticks laid out by law enforcement, lost control and slid sideways into the front of a semi that had stopped for a roadblock at Highway 50 and Kent Road near Hutchinson, Newton police said. Complete article

If they can’t pay the $400, they are given the option of taking the course and paying $500 in four payments. Failure to complete the course or pay will result in Walmart pressing charges against the shoplifter. I am not viewing this as an example of Walmart being good citizens. I see there being two separate problems. First is the mother stealing food to feed her family. Second is more the young teens stealing to see if they can get away with it.
What is being solved by arresting the mother? How then does Walmart expect her to pay the $400 to $500.00 ransom for the “Get Out of Jail Free” card? How did they come up with this number? How do they expect it to be paid and where does this money go? Does it go to funding a social program to rehabilitate? Or does it go to the bottom line? Your guess is as good as mine. But I am guessing the bottom line. Maybe Walmart should consider putting the shoplifter in an in-house training program and hire them to work off the amount, not $500. Just the amount of the items taken. Maybe, just maybe, Walmart might find they have hired some talented employees. $500 is a heavy price to pay for someone who can’t afford a $10 package of hamburger meat.

Jason Van Anden, who runs the software development shop Quadrant 2, told Forbes that Our Walmart reached out to him in April to ask him to develop the app. ”It seemed as if this project filled a void for this very massive workforce,” said Van Anden. There’s a lot of political nuance in a very large workforce, and sometimes this can cause awkwardness between employees and store management. “Just by asking simple questions, someone might feel awkward or afraid of how a manager might perceive a legitimate issue.”
The app, which is based on IBM Watson artificial intelligence, can answer nearly 200 common questions employees might have about the company’s policies. For every question that doesn’t have a response, a peer expert can answer it—and Watson will add the question and answer to its database. Cops: Man fired from Fla. Walmart. So he sets fire to stuffed animal in store. 11/15/2016
Manatee -- A former Walmart employee was arrested after he set fire to a stuffed animal in the store after he was fired, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
The ensuing blaze Saturday at the store at 5810 Ranch Lake Blvd. caused at least $250,000 in damage, according a probable cause affidavit filed in the case.
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed that the fire was set intentionally and the store was evacuated and closed for several hours. A Walmart employee suffered from minor smoke inhalation, the office said.
According to the report, 20-year-old Tiberrus Brown was fired around 11 p.m. Friday because he lied on his time card. He remained on the property until 7 a.m. Saturday, which is when the fire was started, the report said.

The ensuing blaze Saturday at the store at 5810 Ranch Lake Blvd. caused at least $250,000 in damage, according a probable cause affidavit filed in the case.
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed that the fire was set intentionally and the store was evacuated and closed for several hours. A Walmart employee suffered from minor smoke inhalation, the office said.
According to the report, 20-year-old Tiberrus Brown was fired around 11 p.m. Friday because he lied on his time card. He remained on the property until 7 a.m. Saturday, which is when the fire was started, the report said.

CANTON, OH (WOIO) - Canton police had a tense confrontation following a suspected shoplifting Monday night at the Walmart on Tuscarawas Road.
The encounter, caught on video by a bystander, shows an officer talking with a male passenger outside of the car that the female shoplifting suspect had just gotten into. After a brief confrontation, the man got back into the car. The driver ignored the officer's commands and backed out of the parking space, at which point the officer drew his gun and repeatedly warned the driver to stop.

SAN ANTONIO - An analysis of police calls to the San Antonio Police Department from Walmart and Target stores show a variety of calls made in the time period of August 2015 to August 2016. While the calls do not reflect actual crimes committed, security expert Richard Smith, with Con10gency Consulting, said they can sometimes be indicative of problems at those given locations.
Smith, who has almost three decades of law enforcement experience, rode along with KSAT to assess vulnerabilities at an area Walmart store.
"These are big stores, and big stores — they're very hard to cover every square inch," Smith said.
Smith said there are many factors that contribute to the number of police calls made from big box retailers, including how parking lots are supervised, the number of visible employees, operating hours and the size of a given location.

A Modesto man faces a charge of attempted murder after firing twice at two Wal-Mart loss-prevention officers who removed him and a female companion from the store Sunday afternoon, Ceres police say.
Tomas Armendariz Jr., 39, is being held on $500,000 bail. He also faces a charge of being a felon or narcotic addict in possession of a firearm. He and Jessica Long, 35, were caught after leading police on a pursuit, crashing their vehicle and attempting to carjack another, police say. Long, also of Modesto, was booked and later released on a citation for resisting arrest.
At about 4:38 p.m. Sunday, Ceres police responded to a report of a shooting at the Wal-Mart at 1670 Mitchell Road. After being led out of the store on allegations they were committing theft, Armendariz and Long went to their car in the parking lot, police say. Armendariz pulled out a .223-caliber long rifle and fired two rounds in the direction of the loss-prevention officers, who remained by the front entrance, police said.
Police were unable to recover the slugs, said Sgt. Danny Vierra, but one struck the windshield of another vehicle in the parking lot. No one was struck by the gunfire, and Armendariz and Long fled in their gold Pontiac Grand Am.
Ceres officers quickly located the car on Mitchell Road, according to a news release. They attempted a traffic stop, but Armendariz did not pull over. The pursuit ended when the Pontiac crashed near the Faith Home Road overpass in Keyes. It wasn't until she actually walked inside the store that her daughter asked, "Did you see that deer in the shopping cart?"
Collier-Bailey had not, so she and her teenage daughter walked back out to get a closer look.

If successful, the trial could change how Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which serves some 260 million customers a week, monitors food and takes action when something goes wrong. That could spur big leaps in food safety, cut costs and save lives.
Like most merchants, the world’s largest retailer struggles to identify and remove food that’s been recalled. When a customer becomes ill, it can take days to identify the product, shipment and vendor. With the blockchain, Wal-Mart will be able to obtain crucial data from a single receipt, including suppliers, details on how and where food was grown and who inspected it. The database extends information from the pallet to the individual package.
“It gives them an ability to have an accounting from origin to completion,” said Marshal Cohen, an analyst at researcher NPD Group Inc. “If there’s an issue with an outbreak of E. coli, this gives them an ability to immediately find where it came from. According to authorities, 21-year-old Bryan Gonzalez of 1704 South Main Street, slammed his pickup into another truck at about 8:20 p.m., pushing it onto its side and trapping a man and woman inside.

"As I turned back around to get something out of the car, two of them were in my face with guns to my face," said George, a Wentzville native.

There’s no watchdog assuring that aloe products are what they say they are. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t approve cosmetics before they’re sold and has never levied a fine for selling fake aloe. Canandaigua teen accused of NY Walmart rampage 11/22/2016
An Ontario County teenager is accused of a ransacking the Canandaigua Walmart last week.
Philip E. Key, 16, of Canandaigua was charged with third-degree robbery. According to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office, Key allegedly entered Walmart, 4238 Recreation Drive, in Hopewell, around 1:30 p.m. Nov. 15 and stole cold medicine.
Key began to consume the cold medicine, deputies said. After that, he went to a checkout lane and told the clerk to give him money. Key "then began forcefully taking money from the register," a release stated. He also demanded the clerk give him a pack of cigarettes.
As Key was trying to run from the store, a customer attempted to stop him. Key then "began trying to kick the customer in the face" before he ran out to the parking lot. Complete article

Brittany Vela, 22, told the Caller-Times that she was standing in the customer service line Monday night at the store on Saratoga Boulevard when she overheard a woman yelling at a store employee and using profanity.
Vela said the woman, who she later learned was Tanya Simpson, was upset with the employee because a money wire transaction wasn’t working. The employee started to cry and then walked away from the counter, Vela said.
“I told the lady that was uncalled for,” Vela said on Wednesday. “She got in my face and attacked me.”
Simpson, whose husband was killed in a 2015 motorcycle crash, did not return calls seeking comment from the Caller-Times on Wednesday.
A cell phone video obtained by the Caller-Times shows Simpson and Vela in the midst of a physical altercation. In the footage, which lasts about a minute, Simpson and Vela trade punches and struggle with each other as several onlookers shout at them. Complete article

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – One man is dead after he reportedly tried to stop a domestic assault in a Walmart parking lot.
According to WOIA, officers were called to a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio around 4 p.m. on Friday after witnesses reported a shooting.
Investigators learned that a man had a woman by the hair in the parking lot when a Good Samaritan tried to intervene.
The Good Samaritan reportedly told the suspect, “Get your hands off of her.”
Police say the alleged suspect then pulled out a gun and shot the Good Samaritan in the neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Complete article

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – One man is dead after he reportedly tried to stop a domestic assault in a Walmart parking lot.
According to WOIA, officers were called to a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio around 4 p.m. on Friday after witnesses reported a shooting.
Investigators learned that a man had a woman by the hair in the parking lot when a Good Samaritan tried to intervene.
The Good Samaritan reportedly told the suspect, “Get your hands off of her.”
Police say the alleged suspect then pulled out a gun and shot the Good Samaritan in the neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Complete article

"I was phoning every single month and spending an enormous amount of hours on the phone, phoning Equifax, then Walmart, then Equifax, then Walmart. I don't understand why this would take years," Milman said.

Allegations arose that he even posed for a picture with it.
Heatherly was not charged with any crime, but State's Attorney Brendan Kelly said at the time he would not prosecute any cases handled by Heatherly.

CLERMONT – A man who was upset at a Wal-Mart loss prevention officer reportedly tried to run over the employee in the store parking lot Monday.
Police said the employee spotted a woman steal some hair extensions and confronted her and another woman as they were leaving the store. The women denied stealing anything and because the item was so small, the employee decided to let the women go without calling the police.
The employee clocked out shortly afterward and as he was walking to his car he saw the two women with a man identified as Kyle Keanu Kiser. Kiser reportedly dared the employee to say something to him, but the employee kept walking to his car. Kiser allegedly got into his car and tried to run him over.
Surveillance video reportedly showed Kiser and the women get into a Chevy Impala and Kiser drive off in one direction, then turn around and swerve over a curb where the employee was standing. The employee said he had to duck behind a tree to avoid getting hit. Complete article

A Walmart loss prevention worker told responding officers that two men entered the store together then went their separate ways. About 20 minutes later one of the men walked out with a full shopping cart of merchandise, the worker reported.

Holiday ad spending has jumped $105.2 million in 2016, going from $764.5 million last year to $869.7 million, according to data from TV ad tracking company iSpot.tv. The company tracked holiday-related TV advertising from when those ads first began airing on Sept. 4 through to Nov. 28, Cyber Monday.
While spending was up double-digits, the number of brands utilizing national advertising for holiday ads dropped slightly from 255 brands in 2015 to 247 this year. The number of holiday spots aired jumped 6.7 percent, from 230,152 to 245,499.
Walmart led the pack again with an estimated $66.4 million in holiday ad spending, though that number was down slightly from $67.6 million last year. Target, which almost doubled its holiday ad spending from last year, came in second with $49.7 million. Complete article

GLENDALE, AZ - Police are searching for three suspects who stole a woman's car in a Glendale parking lot.
A woman called 911 around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after a man threatened her with a gun and demanded her car keys, a Glendale police spokesperson said.
According to authorities, two teenage boys approached the woman outside of a Walmart Supercenter near Northern and 55th avenues.

PEORIA, AZ - A single mother of two left stranded while doing some shopping during the holiday weekend.
The victim, who doesn't want to be identified, was at the Walmart near 79th Avenue and Peoria when she noticed she was being followed.
"I noticed them when I walked in to get my cart, I went to use the bathroom and the man was still there. I went up and down the aisles and he would be there.
She says she's in school for criminal justice and she knows she should have reported the suspicious man immediately, but she says her guard was down.

The Lacey Walmart was evacuated for about 45 minutes Wednesday afternoon after a man threatened to detonate a bomb.
No bomb was found, and no one was injured, said Sgt. Dave Campbell of the Lacey Police Department.
Lacey police arrived at the store at 1401 Galaxy Drive NE just after 1 p.m.
Store employees reported that a man with two large backpacks had been walking around the store and became angry with an employee.
He told the employee that he had a bomb in his backpack and a detonator in his pocket.
The store was evacuated while police investigated. Police arrested the man but didn’t find a bomb in his backpack or in the store. Complete article

WASHINGTON — Wal-Mart has just opened a training academy for supervisors and department managers next to its Walmart Superstore at 24625 Dulles Landing Drive, the first of 200 such academies it plans to open nationwide.
Training at the facilities is partially done in a classroom setting, but most of it is aimed at recreating real life in-store experiences.
“We spend about 75 percent of our time in the training classes on the sales floor. So while we have a classroom and we spend a little time in there, we prioritize the sales floor so they can learn to do their job well,” Wal-Mart’s Kristen Wilkinson told WTOP. Complete article
